The opening guess is the only one made with nothing on the board, so it is worth settling in advance. Scored against all 2,282 possible answers, RAISE finishes ahead of every other word: whatever colours come back, no more than 167 are left.

The guess list is every word you are allowed to type, all 20,159 of them; the answer list is only the 2,282 the puzzle can choose from. Everything in the first list and not the second is there so that a genuine but obscure spelling is never rejected, which is why a word can turn every square grey and still be perfectly correct English.
Do these lists work for Scrabble and Words With Friends?
Yes, with one difference in how you read them. The words are the same, so a list of words containing a given letter answers a rack just as well as it answers a yellow square. What changes is what you are looking for: in Wordle you want the word most likely to be the answer, and in Scrabble or Words With Friends you want the one that places awkward letters and opens a hook. The green marking on this page tracks the first of those, not the second.
Is a repeated letter worth playing early?
Rarely, because a doubled letter spends two squares to test one and halves what a first guess tells you. A repeat is worth playing later, once a letter is confirmed and the remaining words include ones that could double it. The same logic explains why almost nothing in the opener table repeats a letter.
How many vowels belong in a first guess?
Two, and A and E ahead of the rest. RAISE contains A, I and E, which is part of why it leads the table, but three vowels is close to the ceiling. Past that point there is no room left for the consonants that tell the remaining words apart, and openers built around four of them rank a long way down the table despite looking thorough.
