This Advertising Policy explains how advertising works on iLmrary.com, how we label it, what we will and will not accept, and how your choices affect what you see.
Read it together with our Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy.
1. Why We Carry Advertising
iLmrary.com is free to read and requires no account or subscription. Advertising revenue pays for hosting, tools, and the time spent researching and writing the content.
Carrying advertising lets us keep every page open to every reader, including students who could not pay for access.
2. Who Supplies the Advertisements
Advertisements on this site are served by third-party advertising networks, including Google AdSense.
We do not choose which specific advertisements appear on a given page. Networks select them automatically based on page content, the advertiser’s targeting, your location, and, where you have consented, your browsing history.
Because selection is automatic, an advertisement appearing on iLmrary.com is not an endorsement, a recommendation, or a guarantee of the advertiser, product, or service.
3. How Advertisements Are Labelled
We label advertising so you can tell it apart from our content.
Where a label is used, it reads Advertisements or Sponsored links. These are the labels Google permits for AdSense units, and we do not use wording that could mislead you about what is an advertisement, such as calling a unit “recommended reading” or “related lessons”.
We do not disguise advertising as navigation, as part of a lesson, or as editorial content.
4. Where Advertisements Appear
Advertisements appear within and around our content, in positions that keep the page readable.
We aim to place advertising so that:
- Lesson text, examples, and tables stay easy to read
- Advertisements are visually distinct from our content
- You are not likely to click an advertisement by mistake while navigating
- Page loading and layout stability are not badly affected
5. Placements We Do Not Use
We do not place advertisements:
- Inside or immediately beside interactive elements in a way that invites accidental clicks
- In pop-ups or pop-unders that obstruct the content you came to read
- In a way that hides, overlays, or pushes down the content without your action
- In emails we send
- Alongside content that violates the policies of our advertising partners
We also do not encourage clicks on advertisements. We never ask readers to click advertisements, and we do not use language such as “support us by clicking the ads”, which is prohibited by advertising networks and would put the site at risk.
6. Cookies, Consent, and Personalization
Advertising relies on cookies and similar technologies. Our Cookie Policy describes them in detail.
For visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, advertising cookies are set only after consent, collected through a Google-certified consent management platform supporting the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework.
Where you consent, the advertising you see may be personalized based on your activity across websites. Where you do not consent, or where you opt out, you will still see advertising, but it will be non-personalized, selected mainly from the content of the page and general location.
Non-personalized advertising still uses cookies for frequency capping, measurement, and fraud prevention.
You can adjust Google’s advertising settings at Google Ads Settings, and use industry opt-out tools listed in our Cookie Policy.
7. Advertising and Children
Our content is written for a general audience of English learners and is not directed at young children.
We do not knowingly permit personalized advertising to be served to children, and we expect our advertising partners to apply their own child-directed treatment rules where they apply.
8. Advertising Content We Do Not Accept
We ask our advertising partners to exclude categories that do not belong on an educational site, and we block categories where the tools allow. We do not want advertising for:
- Adult or sexually explicit material
- Gambling and betting
- Tobacco, vaping, and recreational drugs
- Weapons
- Fake academic credentials, essay writing services, or examination cheating services
- Misleading immigration or visa services
- Deceptive financial offers, including get-rich-quick schemes
- Content that demeans people on the basis of religion, ethnicity, gender, or nationality
Automated advertising is not perfect, and an advertisement we would reject sometimes slips through. If you see one, report it through our Contact page with the page address and a description, and we will block it.
9. Sponsored Content and Paid Placements
We accept sponsored content only on these conditions:
- It is disclosed clearly on the page, before the content begins
- It is relevant to English learning or education
- It is written or reviewed to the same standard as our other content
- Payment does not buy a false claim, a fabricated recommendation, or the removal of accurate criticism
Sponsored placements are labelled as sponsored. If a page contains paid content, you will be told at the top of that page, not in small print at the bottom.
10. Affiliate Links
Some pages may contain affiliate links, which earn us a commission if you click through and buy something, at no extra cost to you.
Where affiliate links appear, we disclose them on the page and close to the link, in line with the disclosure guidance issued by the United States Federal Trade Commission and equivalent rules elsewhere.
A commission never buys a recommendation. We link to a resource because we think it serves learners, and we would say the same about it without a commission.
This section applies only where affiliate links are actually used. If a page has none, no affiliate relationship exists for that page.
11. Editorial Independence
Advertising and sponsorship do not influence what we publish.
Advertisers have no say over our lessons, explanations, word choices, examples, or corrections. We do not remove or soften accurate content because an advertiser objects, and we do not accept payment to alter an explanation.
If a conflict ever arises between advertising revenue and giving readers accurate information, the reader comes first.
12. Your Dealings With Advertisers
Any transaction, enquiry, purchase, or correspondence between you and an advertiser is entirely between the two of you.
We are not a party to it, we do not verify advertisers’ claims, and we are not responsible for the goods, services, offers, or conduct of any advertiser. Review the advertiser’s own terms and privacy policy before you buy or share information.
Our Disclaimer sets out these limits further.
13. Advertising Enquiries
To advertise on iLmrary.com, propose a partnership, or discuss sponsored content, write to us through our Contact page with Business at the start of your subject line.
Include what you are proposing, the audience you want to reach, and the format you have in mind. Messages without specifics rarely receive a reply.
14. Reporting a Problem With an Advertisement
If an advertisement on this site is misleading, offensive, broken, obstructive, or inappropriate for an educational audience, tell us.
Send the page address, a description or screenshot of the advertisement, and the device and browser you were using. That detail lets us identify the advertiser and block it.
15. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Advertising Policy as our practices, partners, or legal obligations change. The revised date at the top of this page shows when the current version took effect.
