“Interjection” is derived from the Latin words inter, meaning between and Jacere, meaning to throw. So, it’s any word you utter in your conversation with someone within any sentence.

An interjection is a word used in any sentence, independent of the type of other words in a sentence. It expresses feelings, emotions, or exclamation like crying, happiness, laughing, sadness, excitement, etc.

Examples:

WoW! your house is so beautiful.

Well! it’s okay.

Ouch! I sprained my ankle.

Alas! I couldn’t get the scholarship.

Interjections are commonly used in speaking, electronic messages, and social media chats. But it is significantly less common in academic writing.

Some interjections are used within the sentence, while others are used separately at the start of any sentence (standalone interjections).

Types of interjections:

Primary interjections

Such interjections are only based on an interjection and are not included in any other part of speech, like ouch, oh, Yum, Woho, etc.

Example:

Oh! I am sorry.

Secondary interjections

Some nouns or adjectives act as interjections which are called secondary interjections, like indeed, goodness, oh my goodness, etc.

Example:

Indeed! This is worth explaining point.

There are some types of interjection concerning the severity of expression.

Mild interjection

These express mild expressions like oh, well, hmmm, etc.

Example:

Hmmm! I understand.

Strong interjection

This expresses strong expressions or achievements like wow, yay, bingo, ouch, etc.

Example:

Wow! You nailed it.

There are three types of interjections according to how emotions are conveyed.

Violative interjection

These interjections represent a command, wish, or request like please, enough, stop, I wish, etc.

Example:

Stop! Stop training.

Emotive interjection

These interjections express unexpected emotions like Eww, Ugh, ouch etc.

Example: 

Ouch! My feet, hearts.

Cognitive interjections

We utter such interjections as a result of a decision or experience like, well, bravo, goosh, etc.

Example:

Well! I realized my mistake.

Interjections are also classification based on the feeling description.

Interjection of greeting

Used when greeting someone like hi, hello, hey etc.

Example:

Hi! Ahmed; how are you?

Interjection of Joy

It is used when you are happy, like wow, congratulations, cheers, good, hurray, etc.

Example:

Hurry! We won.

Interjection of attention

Used to get someone’s attention like see, look, shh, etc.

Example:

Shh! I have a secret.

Approval interjection

Used when someone approves any statement like okay, well, bravo, brilliant, good work etc.

Example:

Bravo! Good job.

Surprise interjection

Used when you are surprised, like oh and what.

Example:

What! You got a scholarship.

Sorrow interjection

They were used at the time of grief or sorrow like Alas, ouch, oh, oops, etc.

Example:

Oops! I am not able to move my leg.
